Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) is Kenya’s national agricultural research body. Its Industrial Crops Research Institute in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, sits in the same coastal geography as Twende Green Planet’s own restoration sites, and Twende is building a training-delivery partnership with its agronomists.

A Technical Partnership We Are Building Toward

See the Cash Crop Trainers Programme
  • Climate-smart cash crop training delivered inside our Coastal Enterprise & Cash Crop Trainers Programme
  • Agronomist expertise on coconut, cashewnut, sisal, cotton, palm oil and sericulture, KALRO’s coastal research focus
  • A Training of Trainers model: coastal community members trained, then equipped to cascade that training onward
  • Referenced on our site as a partnership Twende is building toward, not yet a formal MoU
why this partnership fits

The Same Coastal Geography, a Shared Interest

KALRO’s Industrial Crops Research Institute sits in Kilifi County, the same coastal geography as our own mangrove and seagrass restoration sites. Real technical expertise on climate-smart farming gives coastal communities a livelihood alongside restoration work, not instead of it. As with our other technical partnerships, we are working toward a multi-year memorandum of understanding, typically three to five years, matched to the training cycles this programme runs on.

  • Foundation & curriculum, nature-based enterprise training, cash crop and modern farming, then training of trainers
  • Modern, climate-smart techniques layered onto traditional coastal cash crop knowledge
  • A cascade model: each cohort trains the next, building local capacity beyond a single training cycle
