Kenya Forest Service

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) is the government agency responsible for the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Kenya’s forest resources, established under the Forests Act 2005. Twende Green Planet is in the process of formalising a 30-year forest adoption with KFS under its national Adopt-a-Forest programme, the long-horizon commitment that highland and catchment restoration requires.

  • Site selection and a formal MoU with a local Community Forest Association (CFA) at every adopted site
  • Community-run nurseries and planting timed to Kenya’s long and short rains
  • A minimum three-year funded aftercare commitment, the point KFS considers a site established
  • Community livelihoods built in from the start: seedling-sale income and permitted intercropping

Terrestrial Restoration, the Same Community-Led Model

KFS’s Adopt-a-Forest model runs on the same principle behind Twende Green Planet’s own mangrove and seagrass restoration work at Kenya’s coast: communities are not labour for someone else’s project, they are the ones who plant, steward and benefit from it long after planting day. Like all of Twende’s programme partnerships, this is structured as a long-term commitment, formalised through a multi-year memorandum of understanding rather than a single planting season.

  • Complements our coastal blue carbon work with highland and water-tower catchment restoration
  • Ties directly into Kenya’s 15-billion-trees national target and its 5.1 million hectare AFR100/Bonn Challenge pledge
  • A costed starting scope of 10 to 20 hectares, at roughly US$0.15 per tree, once a site is confirmed
